This Sunday, on the 50th day after Easter, we celebrate the Day of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit, and the birthday of the church. Pentecost marks the transition from the old to the new. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, from the old age to the new age, from the time of the prophets to the time of the apostles, from the children of Israel to the children of God.
It is the dawning of a new era which all of the prophets, priests, and kings foreshadowed, prefigured, and foretold. It is the dawning of the new age when God would come and pour out His Spirit on all flesh, on all peoples, tribes, and nations, and into every language under the sun. A whole new beginning. A brand new day.
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” – Acts 2
