Every morning, the sun rises, the alarm clock sounds, and at some point, we awake and get dressed. Socks, pants, shirts, shoes. We put on clothing that corresponds to our vocation, our culture, and the current weather situation. Our clothing serves as a marker that sets us apart,  an indicator of societal and individual values and traits. As Mark Twain once said, “Clothes make the man.”  

The God of the Bible seems to agree. Clothing in the Bible is more than just a mere detail. In fact, clothing often has significant implications for revealing God’s plan of redemption. It turns out that the Creator is also the first tailor, clothier, and outfitter. Despite their rebellion, he covered Adam and Eve’s shame and nakedness in the Garden. Later, he designed the priestly garments for the Tabernacle and Temple, which had an intricate purpose and intent for the people of God. The biblical authors use descriptions of priestly and royal garments to point us to the one true Priest and King, Jesus the Messiah. This King, who was first wrapped in swaddling clothes, would ultimately hang naked on the cross to clothe us in his righteousness. 

Our theme and focus this Advent and Christmas season is the Clothing of the King. We will hear stories about a splendid yet sin-stained wardrobe, with fabrics that reveal who we really are, and yet cover us all the same. The Clothing of the King is torn and tattered, dingy yet divine, grubby yet glorious. Adam and Eve’s attire, Solomon’s splendor, and Joseph’s coat of many colors look forward to Christ’s redemption and the robe of righteousness He brings.

Time is a gift from God. God has created space and time for His creation to reside. God gives boundaries, borders, beginnings, endings, days, weeks, months, years.

Yet God exists outside the boundaries of time and space. God is eternal, enduring, and unchanging. He is wholly other – as the unmoved mover.    

Since we are bound to the borders of this world, we struggle to understand the idea of eternity. We can become confused trying to comprehend God’s plans and purposes.

Out of the dilemma of this divine mystery, God has chosen to act decisively in space and time. He bridged the gap between heaven and earth by sending His one and only Son, who willingly took on flesh and the limits of time in order to redeem us for all eternity.

During the Advent and Christmas season this year, we will discover that it is in the incarnation of God’s only begotten Son, that Kairos and Chronos finally become one.
